Outreach Day Review
03 February 2017
Last term, in December, the Music Society hosted an orchestral outreach day for primary schools in the Newcastle area, which was attended by around 300 pupils, aged 6-14. The aim of the event was to educate, inspire, and to provide an opportunity for pupils to engage, and perform with a live orchestra.
Under the direction of Tom Edney, the pupils were able to learn about the different instruments, and their role within the orchestra. After prior rehearsals and outreach days with the schools throughout the term, the pupils then performed Do Re Me with the ensemble. The day was a huge success for the schools and the Music Society, and we received wonderful feedback from many of the teachers who were present.
"The children loved the whole experience of being at the university but I think they particularly enjoyed hearing the different instruments and seeing the musicians. They also loved singing along!"
"First time, orchestra came into school and orchestra worked in the school. Children could get up close to instruments. Children still talk about it; staff saw a massive impact."
"Widens their education, what is nice about it is it is delivered by young people. To a child the teacher is old, if they say younger people, they look up to students as older siblings. Opened their eyes to a bigger variety than what the school can provide."
Due to popular demand, we have arranged another similar event, with the theme of 'around the world’, which will be taking part in King’s Hall on 22nd of March 2017. Special thanks must got to Tom Edney for his role in the organisation and running of the event. Our thanks also go to Michelle Robson, and all the other staff at Newcastle University Students’ Union, as well as the ICMuS staff for their support and guidance.
Many thanks to all the players of the Music Society Chamber Orchestra for giving up their time to rehearse and play at this event. Finally, thanks to the Music Society committee who provided a platform to support this project.
